Dr. Ilana M. Horwitz is a sociologist of education and religion and Fields-Rayant Chair in Contemporary Jewish Life at Tulane University. She studies how people’s religious upbringing, race, ethnicity, social class, and gender shape their life course, especially their educational experiences.
She is the author of God, Grades, and Graduation: Religion’s Surprising Impact on Academic Success (Oxford University Press, 2022). Dr. Horwitz also teaches about leadership and entrepreneurship, and her next book is titled The Entrepreneurial Scholar.
She holds degrees from Stanford University, Columbia University, and Emory University. Prior to becoming an academic, Dr. Horwitz worked as a management consultant at Deloitte, and as an educator and mentor to low-income students in the DC and Philly areas.
